Review/Summary: The Richest Man in Babylon | Book

Get the book here: http://amzn.to/2sJ3QVj The Richest Man in Babylon Summary : About 3,000 years ago, there was a poor man named Bansir who lived in the city of Babylon. Bansir was building a new chariot so he could deliver the goods and earn a few Shekels (coins) to feed his family's hunger. But that day instead of building his chariot, He was sitting near his house all day long pondering about something. The Richest Man in Babylon Review : His friend Kobbi (a musician) saw him sitting idle, and thus the following conversation began - Kobbi: Bansir my friend, you look pale, what troubles you? And why aren't you working on that chariot today? Ah I get it, the gods must have blessed you with a good fortune, and perhaps a treasure was brought to you. If it is true, then spare me a few shekels (coins). Bansir: Stop your nonsense, I don't even have one shekel for thyself. I'm undoubtedly poorer than you, and my purse is leaner than yours. Ko...

Review - Blink: The Power of Thinking Without Thinking

Get the book here: http://amzn.to/2FDGsvw We "blink" when we think without thinking. We do that by "thin-slicing," using limited information to come to our conclusion. What's interesting is that in our age of information overload, according to Gladwell, we often make better decisions with snap judgments than we do with volumes of analysis. The book opens with what reads like a heart-racing detective story about the discovery of a statue that initially fooled one group of art experts for being genuine and was later shown to be a fake by another group. The first group had exhaustively studied and analyzed the statue. Members of the second took one look --- "blinked" --- and declared it suspect and ultimately a forgery. And they were right. Why? How did they know? Why was the first group so wrong? Are there dangers in overanalyzing? Are we always right when we blink? Can we be wrong, even dead wrong? What is the science behind blinking? Wha...

Review: Eat, Pray, Love

Get the book here: http://amzn.to/2DE3cLj Like most quests, travel writer Elizabeth Gilbert's didn't come about because she was perfectly happy at home. She had recently passed the doddering age of thirty, gone through a nasty divorce and first post-divorce relationship (and breakup), and was exhibiting every symptom of depression. So she decided to heal herself by dedicating a year to studying the things she believes are critical to a truly happy and fulfilled life. The plan was to spend four months in Italy learning to experience pure pleasure, four months on an ashram in India learning to dedicate herself to a spiritual practice and the last four months in Indonesia, working with a medicine man to discover the art of balance. If Gilbert were any less honest, self-effacing and full of humor, Eat, Pray, Love could have easily turned boring or, frankly, irritating. Who wants to read about someone who's not really middle-aged having a midlife crisis and then ...

Review: Quiet

Get the book here: http://amzn.to/2EH6Hjl Maybe you lack the instinct for self-promotion. Maybe you can’t muster your employer’s rah-rah-rah-sis-boom-bah attitude. Maybe you’d rather stay home and read a novel instead of going out to the party of the year. So? Something’s the matter with you, and you should feel ashamed, right? Wrong, says Susan Cain, author of Quiet, a vigorous, brainy and highly engaging defense of introversion. A self-proclaimed introvert herself, Cain examines in the first part of her book how our one-time “Culture of Character,” which gave roughly balanced respect to the positive characteristics of both introverts and extroverts, shifted to our contemporary “Culture of Personality,” a culture of marketing and self-marketing that almost exclusively favors the risk-takers, the quick-decision-makers: in short, the extroverts. Drawing on cultural histories and fascinating recent research in psychology and brain-function science, Cain challenges such miscon...

Summary/Review: Thinking, Fast and Slow | Book

Get the book here: http://amzn.to/2uYml65 Thinking Fast and Slow Summary : Imagine you're one of the first human beings, and you're walking with your kid, and you see a lion. You don't know what a lion is, so you take your kid over to play with him, and the lion eats your kid. So you go home, you're sad, but it's okay, you get your wife pregnant, and in five years, you're walking again with your new kid, and you see a lion far away. This time you hide with your kid and the lion eventually leaves and you both survive. So you come out, you start walking with your kid again, and a bird fly’s over and all of a sudden your kid drops dead. You go home sad again, you get your wife pregnant again, and you make a promise to yourself. You're going to make sure that you hide your new kid from lions, and that you'll hide him if you see a bird flying over. So there are two ways that we think. Both of the decisions that you made are based on the fast, automati...

Review: The War of Art

Get the book here: http://amzn.to/2r6SBpD The War of Art is a book solely dedicated to helping you ‘break through the blocks and win your inner creative battles. In short, the book is about one thing- "Resistance" . That’s the term Steven Pressfield gives to a feeling that all of us are familiar with, live with and often are confused by. Pressfield argues that resistance is the force that holds us back from achieving – well just about anything. He opens the book with the types of things that are met with resistance. The pursual of any calling. The creation of any creative work from painting to writing. The launching of any enterprise, non-profit or organisation. Starting a diet or health program. Any attempt for spiritual advancement. Education of all kinds. Any commitment of the heart e.g. getting married, overcoming a rocky patch in a relationship. having kids etc. Any activity whose aim is tighter abdominals (haha.) Basically, anything that will impro...
